It's not just morning sickness

Fatigue, sore breasts, and a heightened sense of smell often show up before nausea does. Some women feel unusually thirsty or need to urinate more often — both are normal as blood volume increases early in pregnancy.

Mood swings are hormonal, not a character flaw

Rising progesterone and estrogen affect mood the same way they do before a period, just amplified. Feeling weepy one hour and fine the next is common in the first trimester.

When to call your doctor

  • Heavy bleeding or severe cramping
  • Fever above 100.4°F (38°C)
  • Severe, persistent vomiting that prevents keeping fluids down

Mild spotting and occasional light cramping can be normal, but any of the above warrants a same-day call, not a wait-and-see.
