Newborn sleep patterns: what's normal in the first month
Newborns sleep 14-17 hours a day, just not in a way that feels like sleep to you. Here's what's typical, and what actually helps in the first few weeks.

Why it doesn't feel like "sleeping through the night"
Newborns sleep in 2-4 hour stretches around the clock because their stomachs are tiny and they need to feed frequently. There's no day-night rhythm yet — that develops gradually over the first two to three months.
What actually helps
- Expose your baby to daylight during waking hours
- Keep night feeds low-light and low-stimulation
- A consistent, simple bedtime routine from early on, even if sleep itself is unpredictable
When disrupted sleep is worth mentioning to your pediatrician
If your baby is very difficult to wake for feeds, or seems unusually drowsy rather than simply tired, mention it at the next visit — most sleep patterns are just biology, but this combination is worth checking.
