Keep it clean and dry
Current guidance favors dry cord care — no alcohol, no powders, just keeping the area clean and exposed to air. Fold diapers below the stump so it isn't covered.
What's normal
- A little dried blood around the base as it's healing
- A slightly unpleasant smell right before it falls off
- The stump darkening and shriveling before it detaches, usually within 1-2 weeks
When to call your doctor
- Redness or swelling spreading onto the surrounding skin
- Pus or a foul, worsening smell
- Bleeding that doesn't stop with gentle pressure
